Project

Process

This theatre piece is made from a project call's Ygraine Variations.
We started at 2018 in Kyoto, using excerpted text of Mort de Tintaglles, with one actor. It was 30 minutes from chapter V.
One year later, we did a reading performance at 2019.
And now, we have a chance to create a new performance at Kyoto Art Center in 2021.
So we decided to create a full range of Mort de Tintagiles.

Why This name ?

Ygraine, protagonist of this piece, is aunt of Tintagiles. She has lost him, and cried for his destiny.
Now we think that all we are also like her under the COVID situation.
So each person is a variation of Ygraine.

Poetic translation

We tried to translate a text of Maeterlinck with a "Poetic Method".
For translate a theatrical text, we have to think that it's the actors who speak in theatre, not reading the book. But unfortunately, it is normal to translate one translator with "normal language", so we call "spoken language".
We know this is problematic, perhaps in Opera, this kind of language is not functionally.

The language is really broken and reconstituted. At first, translator started to translate words by words. Next the actors try to improvise this not-understandable words, perhaps use a their private words.

"Like a book from archive"

Takao YOKOTA think that the theatre is like a book picked up from archive.
He is interested in a old construction, who have their memory of the placement.
And he pick up a piece to adapt to this place.
The public feel history of place and play.
To emergence this kind of memory, Takao use a digital technology.

From this method, scenographer start to make a 3D modeling.
With this theatre's modeling, the actors apply to fit a space and modify the words.

So we continued to change the words each rehearsal in regarding a 3D modeling and reconstituted text.
